April 9th
April 9 combines two important events in the history of Georgia - the tragedy of 1989 and the restoration of independence in 1991.
At dawn on April 9, 1989, Soviet punitive units dispersed a peaceful protest rally on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi.
Among the 21 dead, most of whom were women, including schoolchildren. About 2,000 people were poisoned by an unidentified chemical substance, and there were also many wounded.
Exactly two years after April 9, 1989, in 1991, the Supreme Council of Georgia, headed by Zviad Gamsakhurdia, adopted the Act of Independence of Georgia.
April 9 went down in the recent history of Georgia as the day of tragedy and, at the same time, the day of the restoration of Georgia's independence!
For us, April 9 is not only a day when we honor the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Georgia's independence, but this day is also a day of great unity of the Georgian nation!
