GASB Students at Gonio Fortress

Students of the VIII grade of the basic level of the Georgian-American School of Batumi visited the Apsaros Castle Museum in Gonio.

Gonio Fortress guarded the entrances of Chorokhi and Achariskali valleys, which connected southwestern Georgia and its regions to the Black Sea coast. It is because of this location that Gonio Fortress became one of the citadels of the Roman Empire, and then of Byzantium and Ottoman Empire in the eastern Black Sea region. Accordingly, the castle includes several layers: Roman (III-IV centuries BC), Byzantine (VI-VII centuries) and Ottoman (XVI century).

GASB members got acquainted with the territory of Gonio Fortress and the history of the exhibits in the museum.
